Hiring Guide
Hiring a FORTIFIED roofer in Mississippi: the verification checklist
Every roofing decision on the Mississippi Gulf Coast reduces to one question asked early enough to matter: can this contractor prove, in public records, that they are licensed and FORTIFIED-capable before a contract exists? Mississippi makes the proof unusually easy, one state lookup, one national directory, and one consumer-protection statute, and this guide turns them into a routine that takes about five minutes per bidder.
Step one: the MSBOC license, and the $10,000 trigger
Answer first: residential roofing work over $10,000 in Mississippi requires a Residential Roofer license from the Mississippi State Board of Contractors (MSBOC), issued after a separate roofing examination, and nearly every FORTIFIED or metal re-roof on this coast clears $10,000. Verify any license, free, at search.msboc.us: current status, the classification, and the company it actually belongs to.
Three details that trip homeowners up:
- The threshold is $10,000 for residential roofing. You may read $50,000 elsewhere; that figure is the commercial Certificate of Responsibility trigger, a different license for different work. For your house, the residential number governs.
- Use the official lookup only. Lookalike license-check sites aggregate stale data and sell placements. The state's search is search.msboc.us; the board is reachable at 800-880-6161.
- Match the name on the license to the name on the contract. A license borrowed from a partner company or an out-of-state affiliate is a red flag the lookup exposes in seconds.

Step two: the FORTIFIED credentials
IBHS maintains a public directory of FORTIFIED-trained roofing professionals and independent evaluators at fortifiedhome.org. Listing there reflects program training; it is a factual credential to check, not an endorsement by anyone. Two distinct roles to confirm:
- The installer's FORTIFIED training, ideally with completed FORTIFIED projects they can name.
- The evaluator's independence. The IBHS-certified evaluator who documents your roof holds the certification, works independently of the installer, and feeds the file to IBHS, which issues the certificate. A roofer who says "we certify it ourselves" is describing something other than FORTIFIED; the evaluation page explains the real flow.
For grant-funded work, one more list matters: Strengthen Mississippi Homes requires a program-registered, FORTIFIED-trained, MSBOC-licensed contractor, and the state publishes the authorized registry through mid.ms.gov. Details in the grant guide. Status as of July 17, 2026.
Step three: know the consumer-protection law
Mississippi's Insurance Benefits Roofing Repair Consumer Protection Act, MS Code 75-24-301 through 311, strengthened effective July 2024, governs insurance-funded roof work:
- A roofer may not pay, rebate, or absorb your insurance deductible. The "free deductible" pitch is a statutory violation, not a discount.
- You get a written cancellation right on insurance-funded roofing contracts, disclosed in the contract itself.
- Violations are deceptive trade practices with a private right of action, meaning the law gives you standing, not just a complaint line.

The questions that sort bidders in one conversation
- What is your MSBOC license number? (Then check it at search.msboc.us.)
- Who is the independent evaluator on this job, and when do they first visit? (Correct answer: before tear-off.)
- Will the estimate itemize the FORTIFIED scope, sealed deck, re-nailing, edge metal, separately from the base re-roof?
- Which tested assembly and design pressure is the cover quoted to? (For metal, ASTM E1592 or FM 4474; see the standing seam page.)
- For waterfront homes: are the fasteners stainless, per the 3,000-foot rule?
A capable FORTIFIED roofer answers all five without flinching. A storm chaser changes the subject to your deductible.
